Gata Kamsky has won the World Cup
after securing a draw in the fourth game of the Final match with
Alexei Shirov.
From the Official Bulletin:
“The second World Cup
is without a doubt the largest scale chess event of 2007. 126
players from five continents came to Khanty-Mansiysk to chase
the main goal – a chance to get the right to face Topalov and
take part in the struggle for the chess crown.
The field of participants comprises some of the strongest
players including three former World Champions: Alexander
Khalifman, Ruslan Ponomariov and Rustam Kasimdzhanov, six
players who were runner-ups in the World Championships of
different years: Nigel Short, Gata Kamsky, Vladimir Akopian,
Vassily Ivanchuk, Alexei Shirov, and Michael Adams, the winner
of the first World Cup Levon Aronian, and the reigning Women’s
World Champion Xu Yuhua. Ivanchuk is the highest rated player,
the second and third are Shakhriyar Mamedyarov and Teimour
Radjabov respectively.”
