  • LONDON CHESS CLASSIC

The London Chess Classic is being held from December 8 through December 15, 2009. The official press release hails this tournament as “the strongest chess tournament in the UK for twenty-five years.” The list of participants does not make this an idle boast - Nigel Short, Michael Adams, Luke McShane and David Howell are four of England’s top grandmasters who are up against Russian former world champion Vladimir Kramnik, Norwegian Magnus Carlsen, U.S. Champion Hikaru Nakamura, and China’s Ni Hua, the only player ever to have won three Chinese national championships.

Round One produced two decisive games with Carlsen defeating Kramnik on the White side of an English Opening, while McShane outlasted Short in a marathon 163 move Scotch Game. Nakamura won the exchange in his game with Ni Hua but, as he explained to GM Ian Rogers “hallucinated” on move 40, converting a winning position into a draw.
